LONDON’S AIR AMBULANCE IS ON A MISSION
The red London Air Ambulance helicopter is a familiar sight in the skies of London and the last two weeks were no exception with the teams attending to 76 serious incidents including: 29 road traffic collisions, 20 stabbings and 11 falls. The other 16 incidents included head injuries, assaults, suicide attempts, and a scaffolding collapse.
London’s Air Ambulance figures for the number of incidents attended each week are uploaded onto www.londonsairambulance.com and they demonstrate just how crucial this service is to the capital. By indicating the type and location of incident attended by both the helicopter and rapid response cars it is possible to see just how varied their work can be.
During 2007 LAA carried out in excess of 1,400 missions to deal with major trauma incidents within the M25 including 176 stabbings and 602 serious road traffic accidents. This year has been equally as busy and in January 2008 the service was extended to include a 24-hour weekend service, allowing LAA to attend to an additional six incidents of trauma each weekend.
London’s Air Ambulance, the capitals only air ambulance service, is a registered charity that relies on donations and fundraising in order to stay operational. Andrew Cameron, Chief Executive of the London’s Air Ambulance Charity comments; “With each day costing the service almost £5,000 we rely on the generous donations and fundraising efforts of our loyal supporters in order to stay operational and help such a large number of people in London each week”.
